Edson Weather: Storm Brings Flooding, Power Outages
Devastating Impacts on Heritage Festival and Big Valley Jamboree
August Storm Leaves Residents Stranded
A fierce summer storm ripped through Edson, Alberta, on Sunday night, leaving widespread flooding and power outages. The storm, which hit around 8 pm, brought torrential rain and hail, causing rivers and creeks to overflow and flood streets, homes, and businesses.
The storm also caused significant damage to the Heritage Festival and Big Valley Jamboree, two of the town's biggest annual events. The Heritage Festival was forced to cancel its final day, while the Big Valley Jamboree was cut short by a day. Both events were heavily attended, and the cancellations left many visitors and performers disappointed.
In addition to the flooding, the storm also caused widespread power outages. At one point, over 5,000 customers were without power. Crews from ATCO Electric worked throughout the night and into Monday to restore power to most customers, but some residents remained without power for several hours.
The storm also caused damage to roads and infrastructure. Several roads were closed due to flooding, and some bridges were damaged. The town is currently working to assess the damage and make repairs.
Residents are being urged to stay out of flooded areas and to be aware of potential hazards. The town has set up a website with information about the storm and resources for affected residents. The website can be found at www.edson.ca.
